Key Points:

  • Origin: Created by Paul Thomson in the early 1980s, possibly in San Diego, CA.
  • Parentage: A hybrid of Hylocereus undatus (white-fleshed) and Hylocereus guatemalensis (purple-fleshed).
  • Fruit: Large, typically weighing 1 to 2 pounds.
  • Skin: Pinkish to red skin with green fins.
  • Flesh: Purple to hot pink flesh with small, edible black seeds.
  • Flavor: Sweet and refreshing with an average Brix of 16. Some describe it as a mix of sweet plum and nectarine with a pleasant tang, while others mention a Cadillac rainbows and lots of spaghetti flavor.
  • Pollination: Partially self-fertile, but cross-pollination is recommended for better fruit set and larger fruit. Spicy Exotics recommends using Hylocereus polyrhizus pollen for optimal results.
  • Growth: A strong but less aggressive grower compared to some other varieties. Tolerant of full sun with minimal sunburn.
  • Flowers: Large, impressive blooms that open at night and can be over 13 inches across. They bloom all summer.
  • Other Features: Closely related to Physical Graffiti but not as vigorous or productive
